Hemp and humanity have been intertwined since 8,000 BC However, beginning in the 1930s, this all-natural plant was unjustifiably vilified and considered an illegal crop in many parts of the world. But why was hemp considered contraband when it is not a psychoactive plant nor is it used as a drug in any way?

We have the answer.

Some companies saw hemp as a significant threat to their business model. The multinational company DuPont, for example, made large investments in the industrial processing of nylon. They knew that hemp was an eco-friendly alternative to their product in terms of strength and durability. Similarly, cotton companies in the southern United States also disliked hemp as a potential rival to the fiber, and joined DuPont in a fierce lobbying effort before the US Congress to outlaw hemp. With close ties to the current administration, the lobby managed to knock hemp out of the race until recently. Any country that produced hemp would also be banned commercially in the U.S. In fact, the only country that kept its hemp fiber traditions intact was China.

But was hemp popular before that?

The first American flag, and also the United States Constitution, were made of hemp. It is said that almost 80% of all paper worldwide is based on hemp. Christopher Columbus would eventually discover America thanks to his durable hemp ship sails. Throughout history, hemp has been a very important part of everyday life.

Why did we choose hemp over other fabrics to create Stardog?

Simply put, hemp is undoubtedly the highest quality fabric in nature. It is breathable in summer and warm in winter; making it a staple product for all seasons. Hemp is durable, resistant and antibacterial; which is especially relevant with the current pandemic of 2020. At Stardog, we like to think of hemp as the antithesis of Fast Fashion. Our products are made for the ecosystem; without the need for irrigation, pesticides or fertilizers. As if that were not enough, you can save because our fabric lasts for decades, while your clothes get softer with each wash.

Hemp is the fabric of the future. At Stardog we ensure that traceability is transparent so that anyone can verify our GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) which guarantees not only an AAA fabric, but also an environmentally responsible product.
